| Once the furnace is sufficiently filled with fuel and crude material, air is blasted into the combustion mixture, increasing the temperature inside the furnace. When burned in the presence of oxygen, the high-carbon coke fuel undergoes a chemical reaction to produce the gases carbon monoxide and dioxide, which diffuse through nearby molten metal and increase its carbon levels.
