| A cupola furnace is a cylindrical furnace composed of an external layer of steel sheet metal and an inner layer of brick. Cupola furnaces range in size from just over a foot to over 10 feet in diameter and are usually used to melt crude iron or bronze. The cylindrical body of the furnace is oriented vertically, thus allowing gases to escape out of its top. Two doors seal the bottom opening of the furnace during normal operation; however, at an operating cycle's end, they can be opened to empty the furnace of all remaining material.
